Haandi – Indian Food With a Twist

Owner Hartaj Singh

Indian cuisine can be tricky. Especially since it uses loads of different spices and flavors. Very few restaurants can actually boast of a taste that is closest to the authentic cuisine one savors back home in India.

Haandi can boast that it aims and succeeds in doing this. The restaurant is located in the heart of Rancho Cucamonga and the tastefulness of their food is obvious comes from the use of ingredients and spices. All served in a casual, family-friendly environment.

The restaurant started in 2000 as an Italian restaurant called Primavera Italian Grill but due to popular demand they converted it into an authentic Indian restaurant but kept a hint of the old. As there was no other Indian restaurants in this area, in a smart business move, they decided to convert one into offering Indian cuisine.

So, in keeping with the idea that it is a lone ranger here, Haandi’s menu lists Indian food – but with a twist. There are specialties from several regions of India – from coastal Goa to the mountainous state of Kashmir. There are some sumptuous and unique menu items like basanti salad, shrimp biryani, chicken nashila masala, lamb nashila masala (both of which are cooked with mushrooms and simmered in a vodka tomato cream sauce), mahi mahi tandoori, mango lamb curry, tandoori salmon and olive naan to name a few.

All entrees are served with rice, pappadam, tamarind and mint chutney. One can enjoy anything from a Goan delicacy like chicken vindaloo, lamb Goan to the famous Kashmiri rogan josh and karahi gosht.

“Our family has been in the restaurant business for a long time and I enjoy everything about it, right from cooking to meeting new and interesting people. I used to be an Italian chef in my brother’s restaurant, “said Hartaj Singh, the owner of Haandi. “When our old customer base, who loved the food when it was an Italian restaurant, come to Haandi now;they are amazed with the flavors of Italy mixed up in Indian spices,” he adds proudly.

Another special thing about this restaurant over the others is the vegan menu. Most people do not pay attention to the difference between vegan and vegetarian dishes but Haandi offers both.

They have won numerous awards and accolades over the years and have been featured as one of the top 100 restaurants by the Inland Empire magazine, three times in a row.

The spacious interior

They offer a lunch buffet for $8.99 Monday through Friday,11am to 3pm.The buffet includes a variety of chicken, meat and seafood delicacies, vegan dishes, vegetarian curries and dals, raita ,desserts, etc. They have a full service bar and are open for dinner 3 pm -10 pm. Naans and other breads are served fresh and hot at the table.

The lunch buffet on the weekend is priced at $10.99 and also includes the South Indian favorite- Dosa Sambar.

From an array of samosas and pakoras to such scintillating dishes as shrimp Goan in a coconut cream sauce, mango lamb curry, chicken tikka masala and pulao with assorted vegetables, the intensity of flavors and the lingering tastes makes this one a good find.

They have plenty of spacious booths and tables to accommodate a large group (up to 100 people) 7 days a week. They also do full service catering. And can deliver to your home or office.

Haandi Indian Cuisine Offers Tailor-made Dishes

Though several Indian restaurants have recently opened up in the area, one claims to be the Inland Empire’s first: Haandi Indian Cuisine. When Hartaj Singh first forayed into the restaurant space in 2000, he opened an Italian eatery. However, it didn't take long for Singh to notice there were not any Indian establishments in the area.

Come 2006, Singh decided to convert his Italian restaurant to one of the first-ever Indian restaurants here in the Inland Empire. The result was Haandi, which offers working professionals in the surrounding area a broad menu of choices geared to satisfying anyone's palate. Diners can choose entrees from North or South India. The daily lunch buffet regularly rotates signature dishes. The menu is friendly to vegans and vegetarians alike, but also caters to those who enjoy meat or seafood plates.
Yet Singh did not forget his culinary roots as some of the menu items have combined the best of Indian and Italian cuisines.
For example, there is the Chicken Hara Bhara, which is a curried chicken dish cooked with sundried tomatoes, pine nuts, and pesto. There is also the Chicken Nashila Masala, which is a curried chicken prepared with mushrooms and a vodka tomato cream sauce.
For seafood, there is the Sea Bass Tandoori, the Mahi Mahi Tandoori, or Tandoori Salmon.
Of course, there are traditional Indian dishes as well, such as Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Curry, and Karahi Chicken. Meat lovers who cannot select a specific dish can try the Grilled Platter that features tandoori chicken, lamb chops, and chicken tikka. Haandi’s Garlic Chicken dish is a specialty dish combining chicken, garlic, ginger, Indian spices, and a light sauce.
Other dishes such as Aloo Gobi, Bengan Bhartha, Chana Masala, and Vegetable Jalfrezi are available as vegan dishes. For non-vegan vegetarians, available dishes include Daal Makhani, Malai Kofta, Mushroom Masala, Matar Paneer, Palak Paneer, and Vegetable Korma.
The daily all-you-can-eat lunch buffet includes items such as Tofu Tikka Masala, Moong Daal, Chana Masala, Kadhi Pakora, Saag Paneer, Garlic Chicken, Goat Curry, Chicken Tikka Masala, pakora, samosa, and two types of rice, as well as salad, fruits, and desserts.
Singh told India-West that each dish is made to order. However the diner wishes to enjoy his or her food, the chefs of Haandi are willing to prepare it to their preference. All dishes are prepared with a mild base and adjusted to the diner's specific requests.
In addition to a diverse menu, Haandi also features a bar offering Indian and Western beers, wines, lassis, and sodas. There are also several appetizers, naans, rice dishes, and desserts to choose from, including a Calamari Pakora, Shrimp Biryani, or Green Olive Naan.
Located at 7890 Haven Avenue here in Rancho Cucamonga, Haandi is open daily from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for lunch and 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. for dinner. The all-you-can-eat lunch buffet is offered every day, running just less than $8 per person on weekdays and less than $10 per person on weekends. Main entrees range from $8 to $20 per plate.
To contact Haandi, please call (909) 581-1951 or visit the restaurant's Web site at www.haandi.net. The restaurant is available for small private parties.
In addition to Haandi, Singh also owns three Italian restaurants in the area.
